Project 1A
In this phase, students work in groups to investigate, study, and analyze the site in order to understand its key components before beginning the design process. The aim is to develop familiarity with the site by immersing themselves in its atmosphere and “sensing the place,” examining current conditions, and relating these observations to the project’s target users and objectives. This process involves conducting a comprehensive site investigation using a townscape appraisal checklist, supported by observation, research, surveys, and interviews. Students are expected to deepen their understanding by referencing key readings such as Life Between Buildings: Using Public Space, Responsive Environments, Cities for People, How to Study Public Life, New City Spaces, and Soft City. They should also study relevant precedents—projects and buildings that can inform the design direction and programmatic ideas—before defining suitable programmes for the project and analyzing their potential impacts.
