Project Phase 2.1 & 2.2

Project Phase 2.1 & 2.2

The aim of this phase is to establish a clear architectural position and develop a design strategy for a Learning Centre in the Merdeka 118 Precinct, reflecting insights from Project Phase 1. Students are tasked with interpreting the concept of a Learning Centre for the community, focusing on character, continuity, enclosure, public realm quality, ease of movement, legibility, adaptability, and diversity within the urban context. This involves exploring form typologies—linear, perimeter, and diffused—through 1:100 models, incorporating techniques like layering, subtraction, and overlapping. Precedent studies are essential, with one case from an international context and another from tropical cities, emphasizing urban settings, tropical architecture, and block context. Investigations include understanding urban blocks and their architectural strategies (massing, spatial planning, façade design), defining Learning Centres in heritage areas as spaces enabling community activities, and analyzing their form, function, and circulation. Additionally, the study highlights tropical design elements like courtyards, passive cooling, natural ventilation, and shading to minimize carbon footprints. Key themes include programmatic and formal responses, street engagement, public/private realms, and societal and cultural considerations.
